Poetry Idol was wonderful… I didn’t win, but it was a really enjoyable time, and I was very happy with my performance. It was such a nice atmosphere, and everyone was respectful and friendly.
I’d never seen poetry performed live before, and just the sheer variety of poets, topics, styles and skills was wonderful and captivating. Some of the poems were brilliant, some brutally honest, some were hilarious, and a couple involved quite a bit of screaming. The 2-minute limit meant that there was time for everyone, and the audience didn’t get bored.
I was super nervous about performing my poem… luckily my sister Nebs, boyfriend Nick and friend Perry helped distract me from my nerves. I’d never read a poem in front of a crowd before, but all that practicing in front of my long-suffering, “poemed out” family paid off! I didn’t need to read it off the sheet, and I think I did well on the speed and expression (no screaming though). To be honest (and vain), I had thought I’d been in with a good chance at winning… but perhaps rhyming poetry is out of fashion at the moment…
At the end of the night we got wine and cheese, and time to talk with the other poets and audience members. That was lovely, and I think I made a new friend. Afterwards my cheer squad and I went to Acland street for cake.
All in all, a brilliant night… it makes me wonder why there aren’t more live, non-competitive poetry readings, open to anyone, as long as they keep their poem to two minutes… it is delightfully entertaining, so much better than reading poetry in a book.
Ooh, and thankyou, dear Nooksters, for your kind wishes and words of support!
It really helped to know that other people believed in me.
Glad you had a great night Lady C & well done for being brave enough to give it a go. By the way do you ever listen to Aural Text on Triple R on Wednesdays 12 - 2pm. There is great stuff and lots of different styles, I find it very theraputic ’specially when I’m driving.
Here’s an idea, in the spirit of the old fashioned soap box speakers.
Why not have a poetry / writing bizo at a public place.
Ferntree Gully has a nice space next to the railway crossing
and of course, chaos, nebs, and theshadow all live in knox.
Maybe we could be daring and have an outdoor art exhibiton at the same time. A visual, and audio fest for the eyes and ears.
I hope nobody ever takes your efforts literaly…
