The Da Vinci Code - a quick review
Published 1 year, 6 months ago in Entertainment.Last night I finished reading the Da Vinci Code, ( I was given a copy, I did not buy it!) and I must say I cannot for the life of me figure out what all the fuss was about. It is a long time since I have read such a badly written, ill-conceived, contrived, and boringly predictable piece of pulp. That people actually thought this book was factual is beyond me.
When I was about 15, I read a Danielle Steele book and I strongly suspect that Dan Brown went trawling through some of her books for his characters; Robert Langdon with his “strong jaw and thicket of dark hair”, Sophie Neveu with her “thick unstyled burgundy hair” and her “incisive and clear olive green eyes”
Thicket of dark hair - PLEASE!!!
The spoon-feeding that goes on in this novel is second only to a Ron Howard film, exacerbated by the annoying convention of writing every major piece of information in italics - just in case we are soooooooo stupid we miss one of the hidden clues, that are as well concealed as a ham bone in a punch bowl!
Now I am not really big on puzzles, but the fact that I guessed the answers to most of the riddles in the book long before any of the characters, shows that either I have a mind of pure genius or that the puzzles themselves were really not that difficult.
In closing I can only be thankful I did not actually pay money for this terrible work and have only to regret the time I gave to it.
PS
How hilarious - I have just googled The Da Vinci Code movie - only to find that it was a Ron Howard film! I had no idea - how perfect!

I agree with your views, indi. It is incredibly difficult to believe people really “believe” it to be based on fact. Reading the book and seeing the film, during the heady days of prime viewing, I walked past a stall set up in Swanston Street, by some group from the Catholic Church seeking to have it banned. They were seriously offended by its contents. Everyone is offended by everything it seems in these days of political correctness.
Yes, I also found the anagram puzzles were skip lady.
Well said
Perhaps dear goldie, there are now two… who believe as you do.
In the same vein, what do you think of Brycè Courtney…

I read a condensed version of the book, borrowed from my mum (whose comment was rubbish I didn’t even finish it). It didn’t tax the brain, I didn’t take it seriously, was entertaining enough I didn’t mind it. My neighbour lend me the movie last night (along with eragon) so if I can make myself commit to a couple of hours in the next few days will sit down and watch them both.
Well Shadow, after reading “The Power Of One” I promised myself I would never again subject myself to Bryce Courtney’s literary stylings.
I put the book down after the first chapter! It didn’t draw me in, so I moved onto another book…one which I read passages from every now and again…Discover your Genius by Michael J Gelb
have to agree gold, bryce courtney doesn’t do a thing for me
G’day Goldie, yep, when you consider the mechanics of advertising, and spin doctoring, you certainly see how Courtney constructs his so called novels.
If i see him spontaneously burst into tears one more time (seemingly on que) when he promotes The Power of One, i think i will…

just watched the movie, sooookay for a wet friday afternoon and I could potter & do odd tasks as I watched it. bit of religious sort of sop at the end, ’spose to appease that ilk.
Great review, that book will be in its right place when it gets into the bargain bin… another fine piece of destruction by your evil overload.
it’s in the bargain bin already saw it as a clearance item for $5.80 today at safeway.
Goodness me…….does everybody take things at face value nowadays?? Da Vinci code is not a fantastic book by any means, but I did enjoy looking up the last supper and saying oh wow……….theres the knife and by golly gosh, she does look like a woman next to him………I’d never look for another of his books. But saying that, I read the power of one, and thought it pathetic, but was talked into reading April fools and thought it a good read. Have since read four fires, and think it one of the best and most memorable books Ive ever read. In fact, I was astounded that Bryce Courtney being a Sth African, had written that. I could have sworn, you had to grow up in my street to have written that book !!!!! How sad to think that you could miss out on things to come, because you’ve closed your minds.
Wow, the Evil Overlord truly does have the power…

Da Vinci code - overhyped crap. Bryce Courtney - an adman’s creation. The saddest reading each week is the Top 10 of books sold.
