A quick Auckland review.
The city and suburbs are very pretty - houses reminiscent of queensland. Widespread urban sprawl, which doesn’t help their addiction to the motor car and traffic congestion problems. Public transport system is unreliable and fairly primitive.
The weather is the weather Melbourne used to have - definitely 4 seasons in one day!
What little I saw of the country is very beautiful and left me wanting to see more.
The people were, helpful, cheery and hospitable (which is the opposite of what I was told before I went). The food was expensive and as an organic eater, difficult to get hold of without a car.
I have been told that Americans view New Zealand as the gateway to Australia and therefore use it as a marketing testing ground for new products, tv shows etc and in my limited experience I found this to be the case.
Above all, the one thing that impressed me more than anything was how well the indigenous culture was represented. Maori culture is visible everywhere from street signs to logo designs to tv to street performers. Most signs have maori translations under the English. Maori people are extremely well represented in the media and most locally produced ads have maori actors in them. Everybody appears to be extremely proud of their indigenous heritage which made a refreshing change to Australia and perhaps we could learn a few things in this respect from our Kiwi cousins.
Fossil - I was directing a school touring show for a Melbourne based theatre company called Perform Musicals (a branch of Echelon productions). I will be going to Wellington later this month and to Sydney in August to do a few more shows for them. Unfortunately not for Melbourne as they have a resident director here. I am hoping to write and direct a melbourne schools show for this company next year so I’ll keep you informed. The shows are aimed at Kinder to about year 4 or 5, they are bright, energetic, informative and lots of fun - the kids absolutely love them (and I love doing them too!). This company is trying to instill a love of theatre and performance into our youngsters and I think they are absolutely brilliant. Keep an eye out for them at your kids school or kinder!
Cool.
My sister is a primary school drama teacher and she’s a big rap for the perform musicals. She raved about one at a family Christmas a few years back - can’t remember when but the book week theme was something to do with doors and the play had something to do with knock knock jokes. Anyway she liked it and she’s not easily impressed.
Good luck with it, sounds like fun.
Your absence has been noted. Welcome back.
Welcome back. Did you go far?
wondered where you were.
I went to Auckland to direct a show. Lovely city! Had never been to NZ before and found both the place and the people absolutely charming.
How long were you in NZ for?
8 days - No time for sight seeing unfortunately!
lucky you.
I want to know more about the show you directed.
Have you directed any here? Planning to direct any more? Where? Speak oh golden one.
Flying visit - what is their traditional fare? Is the food as good as Melbourne? What’s Auckland like?
